Shahidullah Kaiser | Brief Biography

Shahidullah Kaiser (1929-2011) was a Bangladeshi author, translator, and literary critic. He was born in the British Indian province of Bengal (present-day Bangladesh) in 1929.

He received his education in Dhaka and later moved to Kolkata (then Calcutta) where he worked as a journalist for several years. In 1971, he returned to Dhaka after the independence of Bangladesh and became an active member of the country’s cultural and literary scene.

Kaiser is best known for his contributions to Bengali literature, particularly his short stories, which are considered to be among the finest in the language.

He was a master of the modernist style of Bengali fiction, which he used to explore themes of human suffering, social inequality, and the complexities of human relationships. His stories are characterized by their use of minimalist language, psychological realism, and a strong sense of social commentary.
