Dr Hazem Kandil is a University Associate Professor in Political Sociology, in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of St Catharine’s College.

Following an MA (2004) in International Relations from the American University in Cairo (AUC), and an MA (2005) in Political Theory from New York University (NYU), he received an MA (2008) and PhD (2012) in Political Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

His work examines military-security institutions and revolutionary movements.

In his doctoral research, he analyzed how power struggles between the military, security, and political institutions shaped regimes in Egypt, Iran, and Turkey.
